  • Every 60 seconds, a child dies of malaria. Malaria is caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
  • Half of the world’s population (3.3 billion people) is at risk of contracting malaria. People living in the poorest countries are the most vulnerable.
  • 90% of malaria deaths occur in Africa. This is why HisNets has distributed bed nets in 15 different countries in Africa.
  • Sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets protects against malaria. According to the 2011 WHO World Malaria Report, 96% of people with the access to a net use it. That’s a pretty high number!
  • A treated bed net protects people not just from malaria but also other diseases like dengue fever, yellow fever, and various forms of encephalitis like West Nile virus.
  • Malaria has serious economic impacts in high-burden countries. It slows economic growth and perpetuates the vicious cycles of poverty. Economists estimate that malaria is responsible for a GDP growth penalty of 1.3% in some African countries. The presence of malaria can also deter international trade and foreign investment.

The mission of HisNets is to provide a Christian response to the global malaria epidemic.

By distributing insecticide-treated bed nets to those most vulnerable to malaria, HisNets can increase the number of persons who sleep under bed nets, thus reducing the number of global malaria deaths and improving the quality life of those in malaria-prone areas.

One nets costs around $8, so for less than the price of a dinner or movie, lives can be saved and an entire family can sleep in peace. These special nets continue to protect families from mosquitoes, and thus malaria, four up to four years. These nets have been proven to cut the incidents of malaria infections by half and child deaths from malaria by one-fifth.

The New Testament says that Jesus spent most of his time teaching, feeding, and healing. This combination of activities spoke to the basic needs of people to be healthy both physically and spiritually. For centuries, Christian ministers and missionaries have continued to do these same things at home and around the world. For the most part, the need has not changed since Jesus walked this earth. What has changed is that for the first time in human existence, we now have the technology to prevent many diseases that ravage hundreds of millions of lives. The “His” in “HisNets” refers to Jesus, who taught us
